Hamish was the perfect introduction to English Setters, and will always be my "Special Boy" - a true gentleman by nature. He is the most laid back dog I've ever known, but still likes to have the odd moment of madness with the others and like many an English Setter does have a bit of a stubborn streak now and again. He loves the ladies, particularly Lowri - unfortunately the feeling is not always mutual! He is the star of the local vets, were they cannot believe how co-operative and laid back he is.

In 2006 Hamish was diagnosed with an under-active Thyroid. This has very much curtailed his showing, as this condition plus the medication he is required to take has had the unfortunate side effect of thickening and drying out his already ample coat.It now takes a good couple of days to get him relatively show ready - otherwise he looks a bit kinitted! Plus the thyroid problems also cause him to have skin problems which can flair up periodically (he is on Atopica Capsules everyday - and I will be for ever thankful that Hamish is insured). At the time he was diagnosed with the Hypo-thyroidism, he also developed two benign tumours which had to be removed. In fact between the removal of the first and the appearance of the second, he managed to win a group 3 and gain the last points for his Show Certificate of Merit - it was a local show and I only really took him to make up the numbers! In fact he was only the 4th dog to gain the award in Scotland, and at the time was the youngest. In 2008 he developed a terrible ear infection, again related to the hypo-thyroidism, and ended up seeing a specialist for several months. He ended up having ruptured ear drums, but thankfully his hearing was to return as the infection was finally eradicated. He really has had a time of it this past couple of years but has always remained such a lovely tempered dog throughout. This just makes him even more special.

Hamish is pretty much semi retired now, has really been since 2007. But has had a super show career over the years, and still enjoys his odd show appearances. Hamish attended a few shows in 2009, but was saving himself for being a Veteran in 2010! Thankfully he got being a Veteran off to a flying start by winning Best Veteran in Show at the ESSS Open Show March 2010 - age 7yrs & 2 weeks! And was able to repeat this win in 2011.

Hamish & Elgin have also had a wee shot at Brace, winning all three entered. It's a really good laugh and I have enjoyed doing them but I think the age difference is a bit much now so well probably retire from Brace now. Unless I get another Blue to match up with Elgin......
